Sam Hinchey

Administrative Assistant
What makes me so awesome at being an administrative assistant you may ask? (Even though you didn’t ask) I’ve developed a wide range of skills that lead me to this very spot.

Many years of experience in paying attention to detail would literally cost me my job so I would say one of my strongest skills is ensuring my eyes are peeled back without the help of coffee.

With over 10 years of client based services experience in many different environments, I developed the importance of communication, problem solving, and patience (thick skin).

When I’m not in the office you’ll find me hiking ridiculous giant mountains, chasing sunrises, and training to become better at yoga.

Origin story.

Scott's road to helping owners with business sales.

2005 - The beginning

By 2005 I had founded five small companies — a momentary success followed by a round of painful failures, as each business shutdown in succession before the end of 2010. A massive erosion of value and a serious ego blow.

2010 - My big mistake

The most painful business closure was Basecamp. A wakeboard company, which at the time was North America's largest, having five locations and over 30 staff.

I have no doubt Basecamp would remain running today if I had known at the time how to build transferability into a company.

2011 - Starting from scratch

Nearly bankrupt from the shutdowns, struggling to get back on my feet, in 2011, I ran a hot dog cart for 12 months (Duke's Dogs), saving enough capital to found a radio station (Stoke FM), which then funded the purchase of a property management company (Revelstoke Property Services).

My singular focus at the time was building a businesses capable of surviving beyond the founder.

2012 - The learning years

To avoid the pain of another company shutdown, I dove into educating myself on how sellable businesses were built, what creates value for a buyer, and how the M&A sale process works.

My five year journey into business sales included:
CBI DESIGNATION
2 year designation program with the International Business Brokers Association to become a Certified Business Intermediary.

CVB DESIGNATION
6 month designation program to become a Certified Value Builder created by author of Built to Sell, John Warrillow.

CM&AA DESIGNATION
10 day intensive with the Alliance of Mergers and Acquisitions Association to attain a Certified Mergers and Acquisition Advisor designation.

CAP DESIGNATION
10 day intensive with Succession+ for certification in  the use of the Capitaliz value enhancement tool - which is the most powerful software in the world for increasing the value of SME businesses.

MBA
2 year masters program from the Jack Welch Management Institute at Strayer University in Washington, DC

REAL ESTATE LICENSING
In Canada, and parts of the USA you need to hold a real estate licnese to sell companies. Over five years I obtained a Managing Broker License with trading services, strata management and property management through the RECBC.

AUTHORED MATERIAL
In 2019 I authored the business brokerage course for BC's 30,000 Real Estate Agents and have now trained over 350 brokers on how to sell main street businesses through the two day program.

I authored the Business Sale Accelerator and The Business Sale Navigator, two DIY programs for small and medium sized business owners.

SELF EDUCATION

This was a personal challenge designed to fast-track education in the M&A space and can be viewed here - 44-Day Challenge Playlist

2CCX: Member of Russell Brunson's the two comma club, a group of entrepreneurs dedicated to empowering small business growth technology and education.

UpLevel Consulting: Member of Sam Oven's consulting network, a group of business owners dedicated to improving the delivery of advisory and consulting services.

FOUNDED INDUSTRY EVENTS & CONTENT
Creator: The Happy Dealmaker YouTube Channel and the Scale & Exit Club both dedicated to helping small business owners achieve successful sales and freedom.

- Creator: SellASmallBusienss.com - The internets largest repository of links to help small business owners with transition.
- Founder: Exit Plan Summit, the worlds largest online event of business sale experts sharing their knowledge directly with owners, held each January.

- Founder: 10XLIVE, an event for exit plan advisors and SME business owners held every September focused on value creation.

2017 - Success

In 2013, Stoke FM transitioned to a GM and board of directors. It has now been broadcasting for 7 years without my involvement. Watching a company I started provide a future for a new generation is a phenomenal feeling.

Revelstoke Property Services sold in 2018 to a the private equity firm Western Trust and continues to grow under new management. The impact this liquidity event brought to my family is a freedom I want every business owner to experience.

To help more owners achieve this type of exit, I founded Welstand Business Brokers Inc. in 2017, followed by Gateway Capital in 2019. Both organizations have a mandate of increasing the number of successful small businesses sales in North America through the education of owners and brokers.

In 2020, we started OpnRoad, a company focused on helping owners of excavation and landscaping businesses sell their companies.
